Things to do in Gozo: Five Adventure Activities to try
You’d be forgiven if you thought that an island that measures 14x7km might become a tad boring, especially for those seeking a thrilling adventure holiday. But do not let Gozo’s size deceive you! This island can be one natural playground as it packs in it many exhilarating experiences that will surely keep you engaged and entertained throughout your holiday.
We’ve compiled a list of 5 activities you can enjoy while on holiday on the Maltese island of Gozo. Have a look:
1. Diving
This is an activity that probably tops the list of things to do while on the island of Gozo. Along the years, Gozo has built a reputation as one of the top diving destinations in the world. In fact, in 2016 it was voted as one of the world’s best by Diver, a popular diving magazine.
Diving Gozo’s award-winning clean waters (three beaches in Gozo have been awarded the Blue Flag award!) is for everyone. There are dives that will leave even the most experienced of divers enthralled while other dives can be done by beginners, aided by one of the many qualified instructors on the island.
Gozo’s underwaters offer caves, reefs, tunnels, caverns, and also wrecks. Wrecks are decommissioned ships that have been cleaned and scuttled off Gozo’s coast. The most recent scuttling happened on the 29th August 2022 at ix-Xatt l-Aħmar.
With many shore and boat dives, excellent light penetration, and mild sea temperatures, Gozo is an all-year diving destination that is waiting to be discovered.
Ideal all year round.
Tip: Always seek assistance from one of Gozo’s qualified instructors before going for a dive, even if you are an experienced diver.
2. Cycling and Biking
Going on a bike ride is an excellent way to discover Gozo. The island’s varied topography provides a fun way to see the island where you can take in its breathtaking views and peaceful settings.
Gozo’s roads are considered to be relatively safe for cyclists, especially during the more quiet off-season. However, we highly recommend you discover the island’s meandering countryside paths. Whichever route you take, there will be challenging uphills and easier tracks where you can truly enjoy the beauty that surrounds you.
Ideal October – May
Tip: Rent one of our bikes!
3. Hiking
Breaking into your hiking boots is one step you won’t regret as Gozo’s size makes it very possible for you to walk all around the island in a few days. We’ve had people at our farmhouses who came to Gozo for a walking holiday and they don’t regret it one bit.
In our past blogs we’ve featured some great walks that you’d definitely enjoy if you’re into hiking. You can read more about our Mġarr ix-Xini walk here or you can click here to access our more recent post about three official walks.
Whether you choose a long coastal walk, a peaceful valley walk or a stroll in a village core, Gozo’s has a walking route for everyone.
Ideal October – May
Tip: Try one of Gozo’s coastal walks – we highly recommend the walk from Xewkija to Ta’ Cenc to Sanap Cliffs to Xlendi.
4. Kayaking / Canoeing
This is a fun way to enjoy Gozo’s clear turqouise water whether you’re here on a solo trip or a family holiday.
What’s great about Gozo is that, due to its size, if one place is not suitable for a water activity due to current, you can easily drive a few minutes to another side of the island where you can engage in the activity.
There are plenty of operators that rent out kayaks/canoes and you can also hire a guide to take you on a tour where you can truly appreciate the beauty of the island’s coast while the rhythmic paddling and the calm seas give you the peace that you truly crave during your holiday.
Ideal May – October
Tip: Choose a kayak tour that takes you to Comino’s caves.
5. Boat Ride
Hiring a boat for a trip around the island is always a good idea. A boat ride in summer is always special but a winter boat ride, on a calm and sunny day, brings with it a different experience altogether.
As you would imagine, there are many boat tours available that can be organised according to your preferences. Choose an early-bird ride where you can enjoy the peaceful, calming, sensation of a sunrise or go for a leisurely afternoon tour that ends with a gorgeous sunset.
Whenever you visit, whichever boat tour you take, rest assured that you’ll be mesmerised by the sparkling Mediterranean sea and the island’s unique coast.
Ideal April – October
Tip: Go for a sunset tour that takes you to Ta’ Cenc cliffs. The combination of the sheer size of the cliffs and the sun setting on another day will make for a memorable experience.
These are just 5 activities that you can enjoy while on holiday on the island of Gozo. There are plenty more activities you can engage in and we’ll cover more of these in our next blogs.
The island’s 300 days of sunshine make it an ideal setting for those seeking an active holiday, where you can enjoy the great outdoors. Partaking in any of the activities mentioned in this blog is very easy with the amount of service providers available on the island.
